WARWICK, RI — Warwick firefighters were called to a fire at the Caleb Greene House, 15 Centerville Road, Tuesday at about 10 p.m., extinguishing a fire in an attached garage that caused serious smoke damage in the main building.

There were no injuries resulting from the fire, according to the Warwick Fire Department.

The two-story, Federal style house was built by Caleb Greene in 1796, according to warwickhistory.com. The building is recognized as a physical reminder of Apponaug’s history as a prosperous seaport, as Greene was a wealthy sea captain. The most famous member of the family to live there was Civil War General George Sears Greene, noted defender of Culp’s Hill during the Civil War, according to the site.

The building’s current sole occupant had left before the fire started, Kenney said.

Firefighters had the fire under control within 20 minutes, and National Grid cut power and gas service to the building. There fire caused a significant amount of damage from smoke that got into the house because it was attached to the garage that had caught fire.

Chris Palmer posted video from the scene to Twitter, after firefighters had begun working to put out it out.

The fire remains under investigation.
