WARWICK, RI — Officer Christian Vargas was called to the intersection of Sandpod and Puritan Drive Nov. 23 for a report of a two-car crash with one driver fleeing, tracking and arresting the man on a charge of failing in his duty to stop post-collision.

Vargas spoke with the remaining driver at the site of the crash, according to the officer’s report, who told him, “The other car just took off.” She described the other car as a silver Nissan, driven by a man, and gave Vargas the license plate on the car.

Vargas used the description and the plate to check the area for the vehicle, spotting it headed north on Elmwood Avenue then took a right onto the on-ramp for Rte. 10, according to Vargas’s report. The officer stopped the car on the on-ramp.

Vargas identified the driver as Richard Santos Giron, 22, of 125 Wallace Ave., Providence. When asked about the crash and his possible part in it, Giron said he had been in the area making a car payment. He said that on the way to his home from the dealership, he, “Got into a little accident,” and got nervous and left the site of the crash, according to the report.

Vargas noticed a detached front bumper on Giron’s car. The officer arrested Giron and transported him to Warwick Police Headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, and charged him with failing in his duty to stop following a crash.

Vargas also cited Giron for failing to yield for a stop sign.
