Warwick, RI – The Warwick Fire Department responded to and extinguished two fires Monday night, one on Diamond Hill Avenue and another on Warwick Avenue, with the latter ruled suspicious.

The Assistant Fire Marshal is investigating the 7:05 p.m. call to an abandoned building at 651 Warwick Avenue, where firefighters found a burning mattress.

On Twitter, reported seeing youths running from the scene as first responders arrived:

suspicious fire. saw a lot kids running away once wfd & WPD showed up.”

The fire was contained to the burning mattress, which was at the rear of the abandoned building, according to Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Cooley. Cooley said the fire caused minimal damage to the exterior of the building.

The fire was ruled suspicious, and the Assistant Fire Marshal is investigating it, Cooley said.

Earlier in the evening, at about 5:49 p.m., firefighters were also called to 70 Diamond Hill Road for a garage fire.

The fire was contained to the attached garage area, with moderate damage to the garage itself, Cooley said.  There were two vehicles inside the garage at the time that sustained minimal damage.

That fire was brought under control within about 15 minutes, Cooley said.
