WARWICK, RI  — The $29.9 million Apponaug Circulator Project, expected to wrap up Sept. 8, remains ahead of schedule, with continuing construction requiring lane closures and some traffic snarls during high-traffic hours.

RIDOT Spokesman Charles St. Martin said crews will be working on Post Road between City Hall and West Shore Road, closing sections for drainage work this week. At the Central RI Chamber of Commerce, Director Lauren Slocum reported part of the street had been shut down for the day in front of St. Catherine’s Church. She said the drainage work, which began Monday at about 7 a.m., would continue through the week.

St. Martin said lanes throughout the Apponaug Circulator had been closed the past few weeks to allow the stamped concrete crosswalks in the roundabouts to dry without interference from passing cars.

The RIDOT also outlined the following work taking place throughout the project through May 19:

1) Centerville Road – East of Meadow Street to Post Road (Apponaug Four Corners):
  • Preparation work and placement of concrete sidewalks
Anticipate work Monday to Friday from 6 am to 4:30 pm –  This work may require lane shifts.

Centerville Road (Route 117), east of Meadow St. to Post Rd. continues to be closed to thru traffic until the final traffic configuration is implemented. Local traffic access will be maintained to the businesses.

2) Apponaug Four Corners – Centerville Road and Post Road intersection:
  • Curb installation
  • Utility work to overhead wires
  • Preparation work and placement of concrete sidewalks

Above work anticipated Monday to Friday from 6 am to 4:30 pm – This work may require lane shifts.

3) Post Road Village – Apponaug Four Corners to West Shore Road:
  • Decorative lighting work will continue.
  • Continue drainage installation work between Music Lane and Prospect Street.

Above work anticipated Monday to Friday from 7 am to 3:30 pm with one eastbound lane (left lane) available for travel.  Anticipate shoulder and parking closures during working hours.

  • Manhole installation within Post Road at Music Lane anticipated for Thursday night from 8 pm to 6 am the following day.   Please anticipate lane shifts.
4) Roundabout at Toll Gate Road / Veterans Memorial Drive Extension / Centerville Road / Gilbane Street:
  • There will be power washing and sealing at various stamped concrete locations.
  • Landscaping work will continue

Please anticipate intermittent lane closures and lane shifts from 6 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

  • Continuation of concrete crosswalk work on Gilbane Street.
  • At the Gilbane St. approach (northbound) to the Centerville Rd/Toll Gate Rd roundabout, the current lane shift will remain in effect for stamped concrete crosswalk curing through Monday, May 15.  As this crosswalk is being done in halves, the lane shift will switch to the other side of the roadway and last through Friday, May 19.
  • The southbound entrance to Gilbane St. will be closed to traffic for concrete crosswalk work since the roadway is too narrow to shift traffic to the side while work is done.  Gilbane St. south traffic will be detoured to Meadow St. from Tuesday, May 9 through Tuesday, May 16 at 8 am.
5) Greenwich Avenue – Apponaug Four Corners to Veterans Memorial Drive:
  • Landscaping work will continue
  • Continue placing new granite curb
  • Continue preparation work and placement of concrete sidewalks

This work to take place Monday to Friday from 7 am to 3:30 pm with lane shifts in effect during working hours.  One lane in each direction will remain open to traffic.

  • Overhead utility relocation will continue
6) Roundabout at Greenwich Avenue / Veterans Memorial Drive:
  • Stamped colored concrete crosswalk work will begin on Wednesday, May 17 at 7 a.m.
  • Left lane closures will be in affect approaching and through the roundabout in all directions.  The left lane closures will remain in effect for one full week.  Afterwards, the right lanes entering the roundabout will be closed for one full week. Expect delays, and seek alternate routes, if possible.

7) Roundabout at Post Road / Post Road Extension / Veterans Memorial Drive:
  • The Right lanes approaching and through the roundabout will be closed on Post Rd (from both northbound approach and southbound approach), Post Rd. Extension, and Veterans Memorial Drive for stamped concrete crosswalk work just prior to and through the roundabout.  This operation is anticipated to last through Monday, May 22.  Expect delays, and seek alternate routes, if possible.
  • Landscaping work will continue from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
  • The traffic signal was removed at Apponaug Four Corners on 4/20/2017. Please note that Greenwich Avenue and Post Road northbound have the right-of-way. A stop sign is at the Centerville Road approach. Please use caution in the area especially when turning onto Post Road Village from Greenwich Avenue.
  • Motorists are reminded to yield to traffic already in the circle as they approach each roundabout and follow signage.  Additionally, motorists wishing to head east (to areas such as Post Road Extension or West Shore Road) from the Centerville Road / Toll Gate Road area (by traveling on the new Veterans Memorial Drive Extension) should remain in the lanes that head straight rather than bearing right toward Greenwich Ave.
