UPDATE: Warwick Police Sgt. Robert Hart reports the pedestrian, identified as David Quinn, 68, is awake, but remains in critical condition.

“He’s a little confused but he is awake,” Hart said Saturday afternoon.

WARWICK, RI — Warwick Police report a 68-year-old man struck by a Hyundai at 7:38 a.m. Friday while crossing near 300 Lambert Lind Highway/Rte. 5/Greenwich Avenue on foot was in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police report glare from the Sun is believed to have been a factor leading to the sedan striking the pedestrian. The WPD accident reconstruction team has determined that neither speed, alcohol nor distracted driving were factors in the incident. After the man was struck, both the driver and bystanders stopped and called police, according to Warwick Police records.

Police arrived on the scene to find the man lying in the southbound lane of the street with an obvious head injury, and no pulse. An officer performed CPR on the man, and Warwick Fire Rescue transported him to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was last listed in critical condition at 7 p.m.

The man had been attempting to cross the street from east to west near Greenwich Village Apartments, and had walked into the southbound lane when the Hyundai struck him, according to police.
