WARWICK, RI – There are plenty of great events happening this weekend in Rhode Island – here’s a sampling of what’s going on in the area, and how to find free and discounted ice cream on National Ice Cream Day, July 21.

Take extra care to prepare for the heat this weekend – the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for Saturday, with temperatures expected in the mid to upper 90s and dewpoints in the 70s.

Providence and Kent County

Apollo 11 ParadeConimicut Village in Warwick hosts a celebration marking 50 years since the historic mission that included the first moon landing. Starts at 11 a.m. at American Legion Post 43, 662 West Shore Road.

St. Mary’s Church Feast, Cranston: Through Sunday at St. Mary’s Church in Knighstville.

Studio 2, Beatles tribute band, plays at 6 pm Friday night at Mulligan’s Island, Rte. 2 in Cranston.

The Wellness RideFormer pro hockey player Richie Crowley kicks off his 85-day bike trek across America on Saturday. Meet Crowley at Whole Foods, 601 Main St., Providence, at 4 p.m. and make a $5 donation to provide meals to the hungry in the local area.

South County

Newsies at Theatre by the Sea, through Aug. 10 in Wakefield | Buy tickets

Seussical the Musical by Rhode Island Youth Theatre at the Prout School Auditorium. Performances July 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. $12 advance/$14 at the door. | Buy tickets

National Ice Cream Day

National Ice Cream Day falls on Sunday — here’s a list of places offering free and discounted ice cream deals:

Baskin-Robbins: Get two pre-packed quarts of any ice cream for $7.99 on July 21. Nearest location is 127 Main St., Foxborough, Mass.

Carvel: Offering buy one, get one free cups and cones of soft serve that day from open to close. Nearest location is at Wrentham Village Premium Outlets.

Cold Stone Creamery: Join its rewards program by July 21 and get BOGO cones on National Ice Cream Day. Located at Chapel View in Cranston.

Cumberland FarmsText SCOOPS to 64827 on July 21 to get a $1 off coupon for the Cumberland Farms’ “Ultimate Scoop” flavors. You can redeem the coupon through July 28.

Dippin’ DotsGet a free mini cup at participating stores and shopping center locations during a secret two-hour window on July 21. Check with your local store to see when. Located at 294 Great Island Road, Narragansett.

Godiva: The Godiva cafes and boutiques will have buy one, get one half off soft serve ice cream and parfaits on July 21. Located at Providence Place Mall.

Johnny Rockets: The burger chain has a few opportunities for free ice cream. You can get free milkshake samples from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. July 18-20. On July 21, get a free milkshake when you purchase and entrée. Located at Chapel Hill, Cranston.

PetsmartEven the family dog can get in on the free ice cream. Petsmarts with PetsHotel locations are giving away free, dog-friendly ice cream topped with dog treats July 20 and July 21. Located in Johnston, Warwick, Westerly, and North Smithfield.
