WARWICK, RI — Here’s your recap of Warwick varsity sports for Sept. 19, 2023, as reported on the Rhode Island Interscholastic League website.
Football:
Hendricken, Pilgrim notch wins
Bishop Hendricken scored a late touchdown to take a 21-14 home win against North Kingstown on Sept. 18 and take sole possession of first place in Division I. The Hawks previously won their non-league game visiting Kellenberg Memorial, 47-28, in Uniondale, NY on Sept. 9. Pilgrim started the season with two home shutouts, defeating East Greenwich 6-0 on Sept. 8 and blanking Mt. Hope, 20-0, on Sept. 15. The Patriots sit in a four-way tie for the lead in Division III-B. Toll Gate fell, 46-7, against Coventry on Sept. 14, placing them tied for fifth in Division III-A.
Next up: Hendricken traveled to Portsmouth on Sept. 19, after the deadline for this article. Pilgrim visits West Warwick on Sept. 21. Toll Gate travels to North Smithfield/Mt. St. Charles Academy, also on Sept. 21.
Boys Soccer:
Hawks start without a loss; Toll Gate leads division
Bishop Hendricken started the season 2-0-1 on the strength of one-point wins over LaSalle Academy (1-0 on Sept. 5) and Moses Brown (2-1 on Sept. 9) and a 3-3 tie against North Kingstown on Sept. 15. Seniors Brennan Hill and Xavier Wilkens and junior Aiden Brindle notched goals against the Skippers. Toll Gate leads Division 4 after wins against Blackstone Valley Prep (1-0 on Sept. 12) and Rogers High School (6-2 on Sept. 15). The Titans also dropped an 8-0 shutout to non-league opponent Bishop Feehan on Sept. 16. Pilgrim split its first two games, both decided by shutouts: The Patriots lost to Smithfield, 2-0, on Sept. 13 before blanking Burrillville, 1-0, on Sept. 15.
Next up: Hendricken hosts South Kingstown on Sept. 23. Toll Gate welcomes Paul Cuffee on Sept. 21. Pilgrim travels to Tiverton on Sept. 19 and Westerly on Sept. 22.
Girls Soccer:
Toll Gate heads D 3-A, Pilgrim has mixed results
The Lady Titans started the season with a 2-0-1 record, good for first in Division 3-A, following a 1-0 win over East Greenwich on Sept. 19 and 0-0 tie against Narragansett on Sept. 14. Toll Gate previously defeated Classical High School, 3-1, on Sept. 12, with senior Isabelle Lafontaine and sophomores Ava Ficher and Shinyu Vega leading the visitors over the host Purples. Pilgrim sits tied for third in Division 1-A with a 2-1 record after losing a close 1-0 contest against South Kingstown on Sept. 14. On Sept. 6, the Lady Patriots beat Moses Brown by a 6-3 score, with senior Amaya Coffie scoring 4 goals and earning Player of the Week honors from MaxPreps.
Next up: Toll Gate travels to Cranston East and Pilgrim hosts LaSalle Academy on Sept. 21.
Field Hockey:
Toll Gate wins two straight, Pilgrim shut out
The Lady Titans secured two shutout wins, 2-0 over Pilgrim on Sept. 14 and 1-0 over Smithfield on Sept. 19, to take second place in Division 2-A. Pilgrim fell 2-0 against Chariho on Sept. 19.
Next up: Toll Gate embarks on a two-game road trip, visiting Burrillville on Sept. 12 and Lincoln on Sept. 27. Pilgrim hosts Smithfield on Sept. 22.
Volleyball:
Pilgrim takes first win, Toll Gate loses shutout
Pilgrim notched its first win of of the season with a 3-0 victory over Rogers on Sept. 18. Toll Gate fell, 3-0, to Burrillville on Sept. 13 but still kept its grip on third place in Division 3-B.
Next up: Pilgrim visits St. Raphael Academy on Sept. 20. Toll Gate hosted Woonsocket on Sept. 19, after the deadline for this article.
