Warwick, RI – RI State Police have identified the driver and front passenger seriously injured Sunday at 1:15 p.m. when their Toyota Rav-4 rolled over on Rte. 95 South just before the TF Green Airport connector.

Police have identified the driver, Humberto Ortega, 42, and his father, Porforio, 72, the front seat passenger, both of Central Falls. They and three back-seat passengers were transported to Rhode Island Hospital following the crash, according to Cpl. Peter Filuminia.

Humberto, who was trapped inside the car and had to be removed by emergency responders using the Jaws of Life, is in stable condition. Porforio, who was thrown from the vehicle into the northbound side of the highway between the third and fourth lanes, is listed in critical, but stable condition. He was not believed to be wearing a seatbelt, Filuminia said.

The three other passengers, who were able to exit the SUV on their own, were treated and released with minor injuries.

State Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, but according to an initial report, the SUV rolled while Humberto was attempting to cross two lanes. The resulting crash blocked two lanes in each direction of the highway for about 90 minutes.

Two lanes on each side remained open during emergency responders’ work, Filuminia said.

WPRI’s Brian Yocono posted photos of the crash and traffic backed up as responders attended to it. @EverettTrainer reported that seven ambulances were called to the scene.
