Solomon Extends Tax Deadline Till Aug. 15

WARWICK, RI — On Monday, Mayor Joseph J. Solomon announced a grace period for first quarter real estate and personal property taxes, normally due July 15,  extending the tax deadline until Aug. 15.

 “Many of our residents are struggling, and the total effects of the pandemic on Warwick’s economy have yet to be determined. Despite these very challenging circumstances, I am incredibly proud to have put forth a budget with no tax increases of any kind. By giving taxpayers an extended grace period, I hope that I can mitigate some of their financial burden,” Solomon said.

Also, Solomon said, due to the delay in the passage of the FY2021 State budget,  Warwick has postponed issuing motor vehicle tax bills. 

 “Until the State determines how it will proceed with the phase-out of the motor vehicle tax, Warwick will not issue any motor vehicle tax bills,” said Mayor Solomon. “I will not put any additional undue burdens on my constituents.”

 Motor vehicle tax bills cannot be properly calculated by the City until the next step in the State motor vehicle tax phase out is formalized by the General Assembly.

The proposed six-year motor vehicle tax phase-out began in 2017, when the State of Rhode Island began reducing the percent of retail value of vehicles that can be taxed. The planned phase-out would decrease the motor vehicle excise tax each year from FY2018 through FY2023, fully eliminating the tax in FY2024.
