WARWICK, RI– RIDOT warns motorists of daytime utility, sidewalk and traffic signal work at the $19.9 million Rte. 5 improvement project underway for the Rte. 5 corridor (Lambert Lind Highway/Greenwich Avenue) from Mayfield Avenue in Cranston to the I-95 overpass in Warwick.
A right-lane closure will be in effect on Route 5 South, from Knight Street to I-95.
The project includes replacement of the large, four-lane Pontiac Bridge over the Pawtuxet River.
Route 5 carries 21,000 vehicles per day and serves many homes and business including the Warwick Mall. The bridge work originally was scheduled to happen a few years after the road work but RIDOT chose to combine the projects to minimize the impact to drivers and take advantage of savings associated with having a single contractor instead of two.
The project includes new sidewalks, curbs, resurfacing, minor road reconstruction, new signals, and reconfiguration of the Knight Street interchange.
Work started in 2020 on different sections of roadway within the project limits. Bridge construction will begin in 2021 and take two construction seasons to complete. We expect to finish the project in summer 2023.
