Driver Charged in State Police Cruiser Hit & Run

WARWICK, RI — RI State Police have arrested the driver in a State Police cruiser hit & run June 14 at 11:42 p.m. on Rte. 95 in Warwick, charging him with DUI, illegal drug possession and leaving the scene of a crash.

That night, troopers were investigating a motor vehicle crash on Rte. 95 just south of Rte. 295 in Warwick. One marked state police cruiser was parked in the right breakdown lane with its emergency lights activated. A vehicle traveling north entered the breakdown lane and struck the left side of the state police cruiser, then failed to stop, State Police reported.

Troopers caught up to the vehicle and stopped it on Rte. 95 North at East Avenue.

The troopers identified the driver in the State Police cruiser hit & run as Montrell T. Marshall,  27, of 50 Trask St., Providence, Rhode Island. During the subsequent investigation, Marshall was charged with 1.) Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor and/or Drugs -Blood Results Pending, 2.) Possession of a Schedule I-V Controlled Substance – Oxycodone, 3.) Possession of a Schedule I-V Controlled Substance – Alprazolam, 4.) Two (2) Counts of Driving Under Influence of Intoxicating Liquor and/or Drugs with Minor Child Under < 13 Years Old, 5.) Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Damage to Vehicles, 6.) Reckless Driving.

Marshall was held overnight at the Wickford Barracks pending an arraignment in Third District Court for the  State Police cruiser hit & run where he will also be presented as a probation violator.

The two minor children were released at the scene to the custody of their mother.
