Coventry’s offense lines up for the snap against West Warwick during the CoventryThanksgiving Day game at Coventry High School.
West Warwick took an early 6-0 lead on a TD run by junior James Branch IV before the Oakers replied with a recovered fumble on a Wizards punt, leading to a TD and 2-point conversion to take the 8-6 advantage. Branch scored another 6 for West Warwick on a 3-yard run in the third quarter and the Wizards tacked on a 2-point conversion, but Coventry replied again in the final frame, with sophomore QB Camren Jones connecting with senior Max Letourneau on on a 44-yard throw from Jones to senior Max Letourneau that put the Oakers at the 1.
Jones then called his own number for the QB sneak, and another 2-point conversion made the score 24-14. Seniors Zane Parenteau and Mason Martin made a huge impact on defense, teaming up for a sack and recovered fumble in the end zone in the fourth quarter to protect the lead.
A late West Warwick drive stalled at the Coventry 30 yard line, and then Oaker senior RB Tino Almeida rushed for a 70-yard TD on the final play of the game, completing a 22-point quarter and a five-game win streak on Thanksgiving day for Coventry.
The victory was also payback of another sort for the Oakers after falling to West Warwick 19-6 in the Division 3 playoffs on Nov. 3. The Wizards eventually fell in the Division 3 Super Bowl to Middletown, 48-6.
