WARWICK, RI — Community College of Rhode Island’s Knight Campus at 400 East Ave. cancelled classes at 3:30 p.m. Thursday as high winds began blowing debris off the roof, asking students to leave the building and campus immediately.
The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for the day through 7 p.m., alerting residents of the possibility of wind gusts as high as 60 mph, and steady winds at 45 to 55 mph.
Patrick Stone, director of marketing at the campus, said they’d cancelled classes to ensure the safety of students and their property as a portion of the roof began blowing off the building and into the parking lot.
The Knight Campus building is situated on an elevated portion of land between Bald Hill Road, Toll Gate Road, and East Avenue.
“The high winds have caused some roof damage on a section of the building,” Stone said.
No injuries or damage were reported as a result fo the debris, Stone said.
Stone said a repair crew would go onto the roof to make repairs as soon as the winds die down later in the day.
