PROVIDENCE, RI – Investigators seeking the cause of Friday’s Exeter brush fire covering hundreds of acres are focusing the brush fire investigation on a campsite as the possible origin.

Sunday, the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) Division of Law Enforcement officials investigating the cause were alerted by firefighters to an area of interest in Queen River Nature Preserve. The area  showed evidence of a campsite, and several items were recovered from the area, according to the DEM.

The fire was  reported at about 1 p.m. near School Land Road  Friday, and required temporary evacuations as several crews and National Guard helicopters fought to extinguish it. The National Guard, Exeter Fire Department, mutual aid from surrounding communities, RISP, Emergency Management Agency and DEM extinguished the large Exeter brush fire at about 7:33 p.m.

“The numerous fire companies were able to stop the spread of the fire on William Reynolds Road and all residents were allowed to return to their homes at approximately 7:33 p.m.,” State Police reported in a release to news media Friday night.

The investigation is ongoing. The Fire Marshal and DEM encourage anyone with information about this fire to contact the Office of the State Fire Marshal Tip-Line at 401-383-7723.
