Warwick, RI – Warwick Police, including a SWAT team, responded to a report from a man at 28 Unity Court who said his friend had assaulted him while on drugs and was possibly violent at about noon Saturday, but the man surrendered peacefully at about 3 p.m.

Warwick Police Chief Col. Stephen McCartney said when officers first arrived, they weren’t in contact with the suspect, identified as Matthew Washington, 28, of 28 Unity Court. McCartney said they were concerned about four dogs in the apartment, some of which might react violently if officers entered the home.

The WPD’s hostage negotiator was able to set up a call between police, the man’s family and the man at about 2:45 p.m., McCartney said.

“We were able to convince him to surrender,” McCartney said. The man secured the dogs and exited the home without incident, the chief said.

McCartney said officers transported the man to Kent County Hospital for a medical check. After that, he said, the man will face charges of domestic assault and domestic disorderly conduct.
