STATE HOUSE — Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence) has named Sen. John Burke (D-Dist. 9, West Warwick) to serve as a deputy majority leader.

The appointment makes Burke part of the Senate leadership team. He was also reappointed to serve on the Judiciary Committee and as secretary of the Labor Committee. He was also appointed to the Senate Committee on Housing and Municipal Government.

The Senate Judiciary Committee handles all legislation and matters which affect the penal code, judicial system, ethics, open meetings, access to public records and election laws. They also consider the gubernatorial appointments of judges and magistrates through the Senatorial function of advice and consent.

The Labor Committee deliberates legislation relating to workers’ compensation and labor laws. The Housing and Municipal Government Committee considers matters relating to housing, municipal government and transportation.

Burke was first elected in 2020.
