Warwick, RI – Warwick Police arrested a Providence man attempting cash a fake $2,700 paycheck form Bottles LLC May 5 after a Bank RI teller confirmed the company hadn’t issued it to the scammer, and called in officers.

Several officers responded to the 1300 Warwick Ave. location, detaining the man, identified as Roberto Pirinho, 36, with a mailing address of 160 Broad St., Providence.

A bank teller told officer Osvaldo Monteiro that Perinho entered the bank at about 12:45 p.m. and asked to cash a check for $2,714.13. The teller said she took immediate notice of the check, since the bank has had numerous fraudulent check cashing attempts using that company’s name recently.

The teller alerted the bank manager, who called the company and discovered the check number in question was still in the possession of the company’s bookkeeper.

Perinho was unable to name the company’s address when Officer Eric Johnson asked, stating, “…it’s right on the check.”

Perinho also told Johnson that he’d worked 60 hours for the company at $15 an hour. Johnson noted that only adds up to about $900. “It was apparent he had no relationship with the business,” Johnson wrote in his report.

Johnson arrested Perinho, transporting him to Warwick Police Headquarters, where he was processed and charged with counterfeiting, a felony.

Perinho is scheduled for a court hearing on the charge June 15.
