WARWICK, RI — On Nov. 20, 10: 25 p.m., Officer Nathaniel Gray was near the Mobil at 15 Jefferson Boulevard when he investigated a woman sitting in a black 2007 Ford Fusion, arresting her for fentanyl possession.

Gray drove across the street to the Motel 6 lot and continued watching the woman in her car, according to the officer’s report, then drove back to the gas station, where he saw the woman, behind the wheel of her car, focused on something in her lap. Gray parked behind the car and approached the car from the passenger’s side, catching sight of the woman with a crack pipe in her hand. Gray reported the woman attempted to hide the pipe in her lap and turned on the car’s ignition, but Gray told her to turn it off and she did.

Gray opened the rear passenger door and asked the woman to hand him the car key, which she did. Gray reported she also took the crack pipe from her lap and placed it on the front passenger’s seat. The officer asked if she had any narcotics in the car, and the woman said there was a little crack cocaine in the pipe. Gray inspected the pipe and only found residue in it. He asked if there was any other narcotics, and the woman said there might be fentanyl in the car, too.

A search of the interior located the fentanyl, a white powdered substance, inside a plastic bag inside a pack of cigarettes on the passenger’s seat, according to Gray’s report.

Gray arrested the woman, Sydney Mason, 51, of 95 Rathbun St., Apt. #1L, Woonsocket, RI, an place her in his cruiser, then transported her to Warwick Police Headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, where she was charged with possession of a Schedule 1-V substance, and scheduled for a Dec. 1 hearing on the charge in Third District Court. Gray then transported her back to her car at the Mobil station, according to the report.

On Dec. 1, Mason was arraigned on the possession charge and scheduled for a Feb. 13 screening in Third District Court.
