Warwick, RI — With just a little more than three weeks before the scheduled start of school on Aug. 27 in Warwick, it’s time to make sure the kids are ready to roll.

All students in grades 1 through 12 have summer assignments in reading and math to complete before the first day — here’s how to find the information on summer assignments for grades 4 through 8 in Warwick:

Reading:

Students going into grades 4 through 6 are required to read one fiction and one nonfiction book, and complete a graphic organizer, which counts as two extra credit homework grades and go toward first-quarter incentives.

Incoming 7th and 8th graders also have one fiction and one nonfiction book to read of at last 150 pages each, plus the assignment to complete two reading activities [find activity worksheet number 1 here].

There’s a pretty extensive set of rules for the books to choose, plus a second activity sheet to complete.

Among this year’s requirements is that one of the books must be a Rhode Island Teen Book Award nominee for 2014 or 2015, which can be found at the following links:

2015 RI Teen Book Award Nominees

[It seems these weren’t included in the memo sent by Kathleen Desrosiers, ELA K-12 Coordinator. They’re also posted on the Warwick Public Schools website at the Summer Reading link].

There is no mandatory book title list for summer reading for grades 4 through 6.

For a list of recommended books [and ways to find more when they’re checked out, um…] check out the Summer reading list for grades 3 through 6.

Important requirements: Books must be approved by parent/guardian, meet the student’s reading level, and be a new book that the student has not read before.

While you’re online, use the Ocean State Libraries online catalog to search and reserve titles.

Warwick hosts four library branches where pick-up is available and you can sign the kids up for a library card, passport to a million lands. Schedules vary.

Math:

Grades 4 through 8 have their own sets of five quizzes for summer math assignments that can be done online.

Notes: Online math assignment require log in through your child’s school website, and are graded automatically.

The introductory letters, online quizzes, and instructions for completing the math assignments are posted here.
