WARWICK, RI — Here’s your recap of Warwick varsity sports for Sept. 6, 2023, as reported on the Rhode Island Interscholastic League website.

Football:

Hendricken starts 0-1; Patriots, Titans set to kick off season

Bishop Hendricken High School dropped a 23-20 decision at Bryant University against Monsignor Farrell on Sept. 2. The Hawks held a 20-7 lead going into the fourth quarter, where a late 16-point rally by the visiting Staten Island team secured the Lions win.

Next up: Hendricken travels to Kellenberg Memorial  in Uniondale, NY, for a non-league contest. Pilgrim starts its season on Sept. 9 at East Greenwich. Toll Gate plays its first game on Sept. 14 hosting Coventry.

Boys Soccer:

Bishop Hendricken travels to LaSalle Academy on Sept. 6, looking to improve on last year’s 8-2-5 record in Division 1. Pilgrim visits Chariho to start the season on Sept. 7 after falling 2-1 in the Division 2 playoffs against Westerly last year. Toll Gate, which finished second in Division 4 last season on the strength of an unbeaten regular season and two playoff wins, hosts Block Island on Sept. 7.

Girls Soccer:

Pilgrim starts with shutout; Toll Gate heads north

After finishing at the top of their respective divisions last year (with Toll Gate winning the Division 3 crown and Pilgrim falling in the finals to Chariho), both of Warwick’s varsity girls soccer squads returned to the pitch this week. The Lady Pilgrims blanked Burrillville, 5-0, on Sept. 3, with senior Amaya Coffie leading all scorers with 3 goals and 6 total points. Toll Gate hosted Ponaganset on Sept. 2, but results were not posted to the RIIL website by the publication of this article.

Field Hockey:

Local teams start season at home

Pilgrim and Toll Gate begin their field hockey campaigns on home turf this year, with the Lady Patriots hosting Smithfield on Sept. 7 and the Lady Titans playing Chariho on Sept. 12.

Pilgrim finished in 4th place in Division 2 last season after falling 2-1 to Classical in the playoffs, while Toll Gate compiled the opposite record, 2-7.

Volleyball:

Both local girls volleyball teams start this season visiting opponents, with Toll Gate traveling to Central and Pilgrim playing at Westerly on Sept. 6. The Lady Titans finished the 22-23 season fourth in Division 3-B with a 5-9 overall record, while the Lady Pilgrims lost to Middletown in the Division 2 playoffs after compiling a 10-7 record during the regular season.
