Warwick Varsity Sports Wrap-up: May 9, 2023

WARWICK, RI — Here’s your recap of Warwick varsity sports for May 9, 2023, as reported on the Rhode Island Interscholastic League website.

Baseball:

Hendricken goes 3-0, Titans defeat Patriots in intercity tilt

Bishop Hendricken won another three games by a combined 10-2 score since May 2, defeating visiting Toll Gate on May 4 by a score of 7-1 before traveling to Catholic Memorial in Roxbury, Mass., where the Hawks (11-1) scraped out a 2-1 win on May 6. Hendricken completed the sweep with a 1-0 blanking of Portsmouth on May 8. The Hawks remain in the top spot in Division 1.

Toll Gate held off visiting Pilgrim on May 6 to earn a 6-3 win, led by juniors Jeremie Luna (2-for-2, 1R, 1 RBI) and Jamie Luna (2-for-4), with senior Zachary Decorpo (1-for-3) adding a run and 2 RBI. The Titans (4-9) dropped a 10-0 decision to Cranston East on May 8 after the host Thunderbolts jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after two innings.

After two losses, to Mt. Hope on May 4 and Toll Gate on May 6, Pilgrim bounced back with a 7-6 win over South Kingstown on May 8. The Patriots improved to 4-11 on the season with the win.

Next up: Hendricken plays the back half of a home-at-home against Portsmouth on May 11 before another home-at-home series against Moses Brown on May 15 and 17. Toll Gate hosts Cranston East on May 11 and Central High School on May 13 before traveling to Cranston West on May 15. Pilgrim travels to South Kingstown on May 10 before hosting the front half of a home-at-home against Smithfield on May 15 and 17.

Softball:

Pilgrim, Toll Gate split week’s matchups

Pilgrim and Toll Gate both went 1-1 since May 2, with the Division 1 leading Patriots (11-1) blanking North Kingstown at home, 10-0, before dropping a close 1-0 contest to LaSalle Academy on May 8. Senior Gillian Brown led the Patriots over the visiting Skippers on May 4, going 2-for-3 with 1 run and 2 RBI. Seniors Jenna Altieri (1-for-2, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Madison Wrench (1-for-2, 1 R, 2 RBI) and sophomore Adrianna Pettinato (1-for-3, 2 R) contributed to the Pilgrim victory.

Toll Gate split a two-game home stand, falling to Westerly, 6-1, on May 3 before defeating North Providence on May 4 by a 12-9 score.

Next up: Pilgrim travels to Moses Brown on May 15. Toll Gate hosts South Kingstown on May 11 and travels to Ponaganset on May 15.

Boys Lacrosse:

Toll Gate, Pilgrim score victories, Hendricken splits week’s games

Toll Gate extended its recent win streak to 3 games with a 10-4 home win against Narragansett on May 4, improving the Titans’ record to 8-2, good for second place in Division 3.

Pilgrim secured two straight victories, defeating Coventry by a 15-5 tally at home on May 4 before edging out South Kingstown on the road, 13-12, on May 6. The Patriots (8-2) currently hold the top spot in Division 2.

Bishop Hendricken scored a 14-11 road win against Mt. St. Charles on May 2 before losing a close 9-8 contest on May 5 to Portsmouth, dropping the Hawks to 4-7 overall and 5th place in Division 1.

Next up: Toll Gate hosts the St. Raphael Academy/Providence Country Day co-op team at home on May 11 before a road game at Smithfield on May 13. Pilgrim hosts South Kingstown on May 11 and travels to Prout on May 15. Hendricken travels to Moses Brown on May 9.

Girls Lacrosse:

Tough going for Warwick squads

Pilgrim lost two road games, 18-6 against North Kingstown on May 2 and 14-7 at Cumberland on May 6, dropping the Patriots to 2-7 on the season and 7th in Division 2.

Toll Gate dropped a 14-7 decision to Mt. Hope on May 3, leaving the Titans winless on the season.

Next up: Toll Gate travels to Smithfield on May 9 and to Pilgrim on May 10 before hosting Middletown on May 12 and traveling to Chariho on May 16. Pilgrim travels to Middletown on May 16.
