WARWICK, RI — Here’s your recap of Warwick varsity sports for May 31, 2023, as reported on the Rhode Island Interscholastic League website.

Baseball:

Hawks sweeps into playoffs; Toll Gate, Pilgrim wrap season

Bishop Hendricken (20-1) headed into the Division 1 playoffs following two wins, a 1-0 blanking of North Kingstown on May 25 and an 8-7 non-conference victory at home over Xaverian Brothers on May 28.  Seniors Alex Clemmy and Matt Jarmie teamed up for the shutout over the Skippers (16-6), who finished 3rd in the division. Three Hendricken pitchers combined for 123 pitches in the win over Xaverian Brothers.

Toll Gate kept pace with North Kingstown on May 22, even leading by a run heading into the seventh, but couldn’t hold off the Skippers offense, which tacked on 5 runs in the last two innings to take the win. The Titans (6-16) tallied 9 runs on 12 hits, with senior Dylan Penney and junior Jeremie Luna each going 2-for-5 and combining for 2 runs and 3 RBI.

Pilgrim finished the year on a high note, defeating Lincoln on the road, 10-5, on May 23. The Patriots (6-16) exploded for 4 runs in the sixth to secure the win, with junior Jack McConnell going 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI to lead the offense. Senior Robert Court surrendered 5 runs over 5 1/3 innings with 7 strikeouts and 4 errors.

Next up: The Hawks await the winner of the Mt. Hope – Central play-in game on May 30 for a double-elimination round beginning June 3.

Softball:

Pilgrim splits final 2 games; Toll Gate completes year

Pilgrim had mixed results in its final two regular season contests, beating Prout 16-9 on the road on May 25 before dropping a 3-1 decision at St. Mary Academy-Bay View on May 26. The Patriots (16-2) couldn’t answer the SMABV Bengals’ late 2-run rally in the bottom of the sixth in the loss. In the earlier contest, Pilgrim racked up 13 runs in 5 innings before the Crusaders (5-13) rallied for 4 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Patriots, top seed in Division 1, quashed any hope for a comeback by tacking on 3 more runs in the top of the seventh.

Toll Gate likewise split its last two games, falling 8-6 against Woonsocket on May 23 before finishing the season with a win at North Kingstown, 8-2, on May 25. The Titans (4-12) posted 4 runs early and Delaney Wilson held the Skippers (9-14) to 2 hits and struck out 7 on the way to the win.

Next up: Pilgrim faces the winner of Smithfield – North Kingstown from the Division 1 play-in game on May 31 for a double-elimination series scheduled to start June 1.

Boys Lacrosse:

Toll Gate advances, Pilgrim gets first-round bye

Toll Gate defeated Burrillville, 7-4, on May 24 to advance to the second round of the Division 3 playoffs, giving the Titans (1-0) an overall 4-0 record over the Broncos.

Next up: Pilgrim earned a first-round bye in the Division 2 playoffs, and will host sixth-seeded Prout on May 31. Toll Gate travels to number-two seed Smithfield in the semifinals of the Division 3 playoffs on May 31.
