Warwick Varsity Sports Wrap-up: May 2, 2023

WARWICK, RI — Here’s your recap of Warwick high school varsity sports for May 2, 2023, as reported on the Rhode Island Interscholastic League website.

Baseball:

Hawks sweep vs. Cranston schools, Toll Gate snaps losing streak

Bishop Hendricken (9-1) completed a two-game sweep in Cranston, blanking Cranston East (6-5), 6-0, on April 26 before eking out a 8-6 win at home against Cranston West on April 28. West (6-6) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first before giving up 6 in the bottom of the first and second. The Falcons added two more in the top of the seventh, but couldn’t overcome Hendricken’s lead.

Toll Gate broke a four-game losing streak with a 5-2 road win against Moses Brown (1-9) on April 28, improving the Titans record to 3-7. Senior Dylan Penney and Junior Ryan Reid had two hits each to lead the Toll Gate offense, while senior Devyn Robbins held the Quakers scoreless on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Pilgrim dropped two contests, 7-4 at Coventry on April 26 and 6-2 hosting Cumberland on April 28. The visiting Clippers racked up 5 runs in the top of the fourth and held on against two late runs by the Patriots (3-9).

Next up: Hendricken plays at North Kingstown on May 2 before hosting Toll Gate on May 4. Toll Gate hosts Central on May 2 and Pilgrim on May 6 before visiting Cranston East on May 8. Pilgrim travels to Lincoln on May 2 before hosting Mt. Hope on May 4 and plays a home-at-home against South Kingstown on May 8 and 10.

Boys Lacrosse:

Toll Gate wins two straight, LaSalle routs Hendricken

Toll Gate secured two straight wins, defeating Burrillville 9-4 on May 25 and blanking Ponaganset, 16-0, on April 28. The Titans improved to 7-2 overall, good for second in Division 3.

After a close 8-7 win at home over East Greenwich on April 25, Bishop Hendricken took a 24-4 loss against visiting LaSalle Academy on April 27. The Hawks fell to 3-6 on the season while the Rams improved to 8-2.

Pilgrim split its last two games, defeating Cumberland, 8-4, on April 28 before dropping at 15-7 contest at Middletown on May 1. The Patriots currently hold a 6-3 record.

Next up: Toll Gate plays at Smithfield on May 1 before hosting Narragansett on May 4. Hendricken travels to Mt. St. Charles on May 2 and hosts Mosees Brown on May 9. Pilgrim hosts Coventry on May 4 before a two game road trip to South Kingstown on May 6 and Chariho on May 9.

Girls Lacrosse:

Tough losses for Warwick teams

Pilgrim dropped two contests, 15-4 at Burrillville on May 26 and 9-6 at home against Smithfield. The Patriots (2-5) matched Smithfield’s 5 goals in the first half but couldn’t keep up the momentum as the Sentinels added 4 scores in the second half.

Visiting North KIngstown defeated Toll Gate, 19-7, on April 27, dropping the Titans to 0-6 on the season.

Next up: Pilgrim plays at North Kingstown on May 2 before traveling to Cumberland on May 6. Toll Gate travels to Mt. Hope on May 3 and Smithfield on May 9.

Softball:

Pilgrim improves to 10-0 

Pilgrim extended their overall record to 10-0 with a 2-1 home victory over Cumberland on April 28. Senior Madison Wrench went 3-for-3 at the plate with 1 run and 1 RBI. Sophomore Marin Prest added another run to give the Patriots the edge. Senior Alyssa Twomey pitched 7 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts.

Toll Gate dropped two away contests by a combined score of 19-1, falling to East Greenwich 8-1 before an 11-0 shutout at Burrillville. The Titans fell to 1-7 on the season.

Next up: Pilgrim hosts North Kingstown on May 4 and LaSalle Academy on May 8. Toll Gate hosts Westerly on May 3 and North Providence on May 4 before hosting Johnston on May 9.
