Warwick Varsity Sports: Soccer Teams Lead Divisions

WARWICK, RI —  Toll Gate’s boys soccer squad and both of Warwick’s girls soccer teams kept their hold on the top spots in their respective divisions after this week’s action in Warwick varsity sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Football:

Pilgrim thrashes ‘Gansett; Hawks shut out Falcons

Pilgrim trounced Narragansett on Oct. 6, 44-21, with senior quarterback Chace Roberts going 15-for-26 for 222 yards, 4 TDs and one interception. Senior Cole Bigelli tallied two scores, and the Patriots defense snagged three picks against the Mariners. Bishop Hendricken defeated Cranston West on Oct. 5 in a shutout, 44-0, helping the Hawks maintain first place in Division 1. Toll Gate fell to Classical at home on Oct. 5, 40-7.

Next up: Hendricken travels to LaSalle Academy on Oct. 13. Pilgrim hosts Rogers on Oct. 13. Toll Gate played at Classical on Oct. 9; no information was available on the RIIL website at the time of this article. The Titans host Tolman on Oct. 19.

Boys soccer:

Toll Gate remains 1st in division

The Toll Gate Titans maintained their hold on first place in Division 4 following a 3-1 home victory over Blackstone Valley Prep on Oct. 10. Toll Gate improved its home record to 4-0 with the win. Bishop Hendricken shut out Central Falls, 1-0, on Oct. 7, following sophomore Marcello Perretta’s goal in the second half. The victory improved the Hawks record to 6-1-1, tied with South Kingstown for third in Division 1. Pilgrim secured two wins at home — 3-0 against Hope on Oct. 4 and 2-1 against West Warwick on Oct. 6 — before a road loss to Cranston West on Oct. 10.  Senior Lukas Patten, junior Logan McDermott, and sophomore Jackson Bromage combined for the shutout over the Blue Wave, while Bromage and junior Josiel Zuniga contributed goals in the win against the Wizards. Goaltender Declan Bragg made 16 saves during the two victories.

Next up: Toll Gate travels to Rogers on Oct. 11 before hosting Providence Country Day on Oct. 13. Hendricken visits Central on Oct. 11 and Classical on Oct. 13. Pilgrim hosts North Smithfield on Oct. 12 then travels to Cranston East on Oct. 17.

Girls soccer:

Warwick squads top divisions

Both local girls soccer teams secured first place in their respective divisions, with Toll Gate tallying eight goals over its last two wins, 4-0 over Lincoln School on Oct. 2 and 4-2 over Tiverton on Oct. 10. Senior Kaitlyn Pale notched two goals and contributed an assist against the Lynx, while senior Adeline Areson led the Lady Titans with two goals against the Tigers. Junior goalie Alanna Pereira made 14 saves over the two contests. Following two losses, 2-1 to Mt. Hope on Oct. 2 and 3-2 at Cumberland on Oct. 5, Pilgrim defeated Chariho, 2-1 on Oct. 7. Senior Amaya Coffie earned RILL Player of the Game honors after scoring two goals in the win. Coffie scored the Lady Patriots’ only goal in a 2-1 loss to North Kingstown on Oct. 10.

Next up: Pilgrim visits Moses Brown on Oct. 12 and hosts South Kingstown on Oct. 14. Toll Gate visits St. Raphael Academy on Oct. 12 before hosting Classical on Oct. 16.

Volleyball:

Warwick teams fall to rivals

Toll Gate fell 3-1 to Narragansett on Oct. 5 before a road loss to Block Island, 3-0, on Oct. 9. The Lady Titans remain in third place in Division 3B with a 3-2 division record. Pilgrim lost to visiting East Providence, 3-1, on Oct. 10.

Next up: Toll Gate hosts Central on Oct. 12 and Scituate on Oct. 17. Pilgrim travels to Middletown on Oct. 12 and Ponaganset on Oct. 16.
