Warwick Varsity Sports: Hawks Lead Hockey, Basketball

WARWICK, RI — Bishop Hendricken maintained its hold on first place in hockey and basketball while Pilgrim’s basketball teams each scored victories this week in Warwick varsity sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Boys hockey:

Hendricken tallies two more wins, Patriots fall in OT

Bishop Hendricken improved to 3-0 on the new season with an 11-0 win over East Greenwich/Toll Gate on Dec. 15 and a 6-2 victory over Barrington on Dec. 16. Senior Griffin Crain and freshman Nick Stevens led the Hawks with two goals each against the Eagles, with seniors John LaRose and Nathan Marshall tallying one score each. Junior Colin Murray made 13 saves in the win that maintained the Hawks’ first-place position in Division 1. Pilgrim lost 4-3 in overtime to Warde/Ludlowe High School from Fairfield, CT, on Dec. 16. Senior Ryan Barlow, junior Richie Cavanagh, and sophomore Jackson Monte scored for the Patriots. Junior Brandon Laudon and sophomore Michael Bessette combined for 45 saves in net. The EG/Toll Gate co-op fell to North Kingstown 4-1 on Dec. 16, dropping the squad to 1-4 on the season.

Next up: Hendricken hosts East Greenwich/Toll Gate on Dec. 22. Pilgrim hosts Darien High School from Darien CT on Dec. 27.

Girls hockey:

Co-op squad drops two

Junior Ayla Paley notched the Toll Gate/Pilgrim co-op team’s only goal in a 15-1 loss to Smithfield on Dec. 15 before the local squad fell 7-1 to Narragansett on Dec. 16.  Five different players scored goals for the Mariners.

Next up: The Titans host LaSalle Academy on Dec. 22.

Boys basketball:

Hawks rule D-1 roost; Patriots defeat Coventry

Hendricken continued its unbeaten streak with a 59-55 win over Portsmouth on Dec. 15, improving the Hawks’ record to 2-0 and placing them first in Division 1. Pilgrim defeated Coventry 67-46 on Dec. 20 following a loss by the same score to Cathedral Prep in Elmhurst, NY, on Dec. 15. The Patriots are now 2-2 overall on the season.

Next up: Toll Gate travels to West Warwick on Dec. 28. Hendricken hosted Woonsocket on Dec. 21; results were not available at deadline for this article. The Hawks host Nazareth High School from Brooklyn, NY, on Dec. 30. Pilgrim visits Mt. Hope High School in Bristol on Jan. 5.

Girls basketball:

Pilgrim notches first ‘W,’ Titans improve to 2-1

Pilgrim’s girls basketball squad earned their first win of the season with a 37-25 victory over Middletown on Dec. 19. Senior Amaya Coffee led Patriot scorers with 11 points and recorded six steals on D. Pilgrim dropped a 34-23 decision to Narragansett on Dec. 21. Toll Gate fell to Exeter-West Greenwich 51-41 on Dec. 15 and bounced back with a 43-31 victory over Middletown on Dec. 21, improving the Titans’ record to 2-1, good for fourth place in Division 3.

Next up: Pilgrim visits West Warwick on Dec. 28. Toll Gate hosts North Providence on Jan. 3.
