Coventry Sports: Oaker Skaters Trounce Opponents

The 2023-24 Coventry girls varsity basketball team.
COVENTRY, RI — The local basketball squads had mixed results while girls hockey team outscored the opposition 22-2 and the boys team fell in overtime last week in varsity Coventry sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Boys hockey:

Oakers fall in close contest

Coventry’s boys hockey team dropped a close 7-6 contest to Mt. Hope on Dec. 17 after the game went to a shootout. The Oakers put 4 goals on the board in the second period to take a 4-3 lead, but the Huskies had the advantage in the third period, outscoring Coventry 3-2 to force the tie. Mt. Hope converted 5 of 6 power plays, while the Oakers scored on both of their man-advantage opportunities. The loss followed a 7-4 defeat by Portsmouth on Dec. 15.

Next up: Coventry hosts West Warwick on Dec. 22 and South Kingstown on Dec. 27.

Girls hockey:

Coventry co-op on high-scoring run in hockey

The Smithfield/Coventry/Moses Brown co-op squad racked up a 22-2 scoring advantage over their competition this week, tallying 7 goals at Woodstock Academy on Dec. 13 and 15 in a rout over Toll Gate/Pilgrim on Dec. 15 while allowing just one goal in each game, giving the local squad sole possession of first place in Division 1.

Next up: The local co-op team travels to Auburn, MA, to face Auburn High School on Jan. 9.

Boys basketball:

Oakers off to tough start

Coventry began the year 0-3 following losses against Johnston on Dec. 12, Rogers on Dec. 14, and Pilgrim on Dec. 20. The Oakers averaged 48 points per game during the stretch.

Next up: Coventry travels to Exeter-West Greenwich on Dec. 22 and hosts Central Falls on Dec. 27.

Girls basketball:

Back-and-forth season so far for Coventry

The Coventry girls basketball team compiled a 2-2 record with wins over Tiverton on Dec. 13 and Cranston East on Dec. 19 alternating with losses to Scituate on Dec. 11 and Moses Brown on Dec. 16, placing the Oakers eighth in Division 2 with a 2-3 overall record.

Next up: Coventry travels to Mount Pleasant on Dec. 21 and hosts Exeter-West Greenwich on Dec. 27.
