Warwick Varsity Sports: Hawks Extend Win Streaks

WARWICK, RI — Bishop Hendricken improved to 5-0 in hockey and 3-0 in basketball this week in Warwick varsity sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Boys hockey:

Hendricken moves to 5-0; Pilgrim drops two close contests

Bishop Hendricken defeated the East Greenwich/Toll Gate co-op team 6-2 on Dec. 22 and followed up the next day with a 3-0 shutout over LaSalle Academy to keep the Hawks in first place in Division 1 with a 5-0 record. The Hawks exploded for a 5-goal second period against the EG/TC squad, and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against the Rams to secure the wins. Pilgrim lost to Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe 4-3 in overtime on Dec. 16, with three different players scoring goals for the Warwick squad. Goalies Brandon Laudon and Michael Bessette split netminding duties in the contest, combining for 38 saves. The Patriots dropped a 3-2 decision to Darien High School on Dec. 27 after tallying two scores in the second period.

Next up: Hendricken hosts Mount St. Charles Academy on Jan. 5. Pilgrim hosts Cumberland on Jan. 5. East Greenwich/Toll Gate kicks off a three-game road trip against Burrillville on Dec. 28.

Girls hockey:

Rams deal co-op squad a shutout

The Toll Gate/Pilgrim co-op team fell to LaSalle Academy 8-0 at home on Dec. 22, dropping the local squad to 0-4 on the season.

Next up: Toll Gate/Pilgrim travels to Burrillville on Dec. 30.

Boys basketball:

Hawks crush Woonsocket

Bishop Hendricken defeated Woonsocket 73-28 on Dec. 21, after a 29-11 run in the third quarter put the game out of reach for the Villa Novans. Jakob Reyes and James Caldarella combined for 35 points for the Hawks, who improved to 3-0 on the season, placing them first in Division 1. Toll Gate and Pilgrim were off this week.

Next up: Toll Gate travels to West Warwick on Dec. 28. Hendricken hosts Nazareth High School from Brooklyn, NY, on Dec. 30. Pilgrim visits Mt. Hope High School in Bristol on Jan. 5.

Girls basketball:

Local squads look ahead to next contests

Both of Warwick’s girls varsity teams were off this week.

Next up: Pilgrim hosts Scituate on Dec. 28, before traveling to Toll Gate on Dec. 29 and hosting North Providence on Jan. 3 . Toll Gate travels to West Warwick on Dec. 29 and hosts Narragansett on Jan. 3.
