Warwick Varsity Sports: Girls Soccer Teams Tally Shutouts, Toll Gate Leads D-4 Soccer

WARWICK, RI — Both girls’ soccer teams scored impressive wins, and Toll Gate took first place in Division 4 boys soccer during this week’s action in Warwick varsity sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Football:

Toll Gate posts first win; Pilgrim drops close contest

The Toll Gate Titans secured their first win of the season on Sept. 29, defeating Chariho on the road, 27-15 and improving their record to 1-2, good for sixth in Division 3-A. Despite senior QB Chace Roberts going 23-for-28 for 303 yards and 3 TDs, Pilgrim fell to Ponaganset, 28-21, on Sept. 28. The Patriots’ record stands at 1-2, placing them fourth in Division 3-B.

Next up: Hendricken hosts Cranston West on Oct. 5. Toll Gate welcomes Classical, also on Oct. 5. Pilgrim travels to Narragansett on Oct. 6.

Boys soccer:

Titans secure top spot; Hendricken posts two shutouts

Toll Gate moved up to first place in Division 4 with a 4-2 win at home over division rival Woonsocket on Sept. 28. The loss knocked the Villa Novans down to second place in D-4 with a 5-1-2 record compared to the Titans’ 4-1 division record. Pilgrim lost to Coventry, 3-0, on Sept. 28. Oakers sophomore Cade Nigrelli scored two goals in the match, and senior netminder Aidan Simao recorded the shutout in goal. Bishop Hendricken recorded two shutouts, defeating Tolman 4-0 on Sept. 27 and Barrington 3-0 on Oct. 2. Senior Xavier Wilkins posted two goals in the earlier contest.

Next up: Pilgrim hosts Hope on Oct. 4 and West Warwick on Oct. 6. Hendricken hosts Central Falls on Oct. 7. Toll Gate travels to Block Island on Oct. 9.

Girls soccer:

Local teams continue winning ways

Toll Gate and Pilgrim both scored shutouts, with the Lady Titans defeating the Lincoln School, 4-0, on Oct. 2. Senior Kaitlyn Pale scored two goals and junior goaltender Alanna Pereira earned the shutout. The victory helped Toll Gate maintain first place in Division 3. Pilgrim blanked Barrington by an identical  4-0 score on Sept. 27, with four players contributing goals to the win for the Lady Patriots, currently second in Division 1.

Next up: Pilgrim hosts Mt. Hope on Oct. 3 before traveling to Cumberland on Oct. 5. Toll Gate visits Tiverton on Oct. 10.

Volleyball:

Rough going for local squads

Toll Gate took the first game during its Oct. 2 match against Central Falls, then dropped three straight to fall 3-1, leaving the Lady Titans in third place in Division 3-B. Pilgrim scored 20 or more in all three sets against St. Mary Academy-Bay View but couldn’t overcome the Bengals’ offense in a 3-0 loss on Sept. 27. The Lady Patriots also dropped a 3-0 contest to Mt. Hope on Oct. 2.

Next up: Toll Gate travels to Narragansett on Oct. 5 before visiting Block Island on Oct. 9. Pilgrim visits Lincoln on Oct. 4.
