WARWICK, RI — Officer Derek Mourato was on Elmwood Avenue Nov. 13 at 7:57 p.m. when he spotted a silver Honda Accord sedan, the occupants without seat belts, and expired plates registered to a 1997 Chevy Blazer, and pulled it over, arresting the driver after learning the car was stolen.
Mourato identified the driver as Jesus Colon, 21, of 40 Peter Street, Providence, who appeared nervous and was shaking, avoiding eye contact with the officer, according to his report. Colon said he had just picked up a friend and that they had just left the Seasons Market gas station on Elmwood Avenue.
Mourato returned to his cruiser to check on Colon, learning that he had an expired driver’s license. A check on one of the passengers’ names turned up no record, and the officer asked him to step form the car. When pressed for his real name, the man identified himself as Devonte Bonds, 22. Bonds also appeared nervous, Mourato reported.
Bonds told Mourato he had been arrested in the past for possession of a stolen vehicle. Mourato asked if the Honda was stolen, to which Bonds replied, “I don’t know, it could be.”
Mourato ran a vin check on the car, learning it had been reported stolen from Chiqui Auto Sales and Muffler at 601 Lonsdale Ave., Central Falls, RI,
Mourato asked Colon where he got the Honda, to which the driver replied that he didn’t know.
WPD Sgt. Alan Valliere arrived, and, after reviewing the case with him, Mourato arrested Colon for Driving without the Consent of Owner, Operating an Unregistered Vehicle and Operating without Insurance.
Colon was handcuffed and transported to Warwick Police Headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, where he was identified as a probation violator, and held overnight for the next session of Third District Court.
The Honda was taken from the scene by Shea’s Towing.
