Warwick Man Faces Animal Cruelty Charges for Dead & Malnourished Dogs

WARWICK, RI — A Warwick man faces animal cruelty charges after they found three dogs dead and four malnourished at 222 Sand Pond Road Monday.

Warwick Police were called to the address at 12:19  p.m. for a reported emaciated dog with no food or water in the yard. Warwick Animal Control Officers  found one severely emaciated dog with open sores in the back yard of the home. Officers also observed and could hear additional dogs inside the residence. They could also smell a strong odor of feces, urine and decay coming from inside.

Based on the observed evidence of animal cruelty, Warwick Police Detectives obtained a search warrant for the property, finding the malnourished and emaciated dogs, seized them from the residence and transported them to the Warwick Animal Shelter for treatment. Officers also found the four dead dogs inside the home.

Police arrested Michael J. Diaz, 22, of 222 Sand Pond Rd, Warwick, RI,  charging him with:

  • Thee Felony counts of Unnecessary Cruelty to Animals, Death Resulting and
  • Four Misdemeanor counts of Unnecessary Cruelty to Animals, Failing to Provide Adequate Living
    Conditions, Food and Water.

Diaz was held at Warwick Police Headquarters until a hearing of Third District Court at Kent County Court House this morning at 9 a.m..
