Scott Elementary Leads Warwick RIDE Report Cards

WARWICK, RI – Warwick Schools’ Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) report cards for 2022-2023 place them largely in the middle of the pack, with Harold F. Scott Elementary standing out with 4 out of 5 stars.

RIDE assigns a 1 – 5 star rating for every school in the state each year. The Warwick School Committee learned where city schools stand in the latest report at their meeting Thursday night, courtesy of Lisa Schultz, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Warwick Elementary Schools RIDE Report Cards

Warwick’s elementary schools received mostly 3-star ratings, placing them among the majority, 70, of the state’s 165 elementary schools.

Scott Elementary School scored a 4, placing them among 19 Rhode Island elementary schools. RIDE noted the rating was driven primarily by achievement and growth.

Lippitt and Oakland Beach each scored a 2, placing them among 50 Rhode Island elementary schools 

Warwick High Schools RIDE Report Cards

Warwick’s Secondary schools were all rated 2, along with most secondary schools. The city’s two high schools, Pilgrim and Toll Gate, were rated 2, as were the majority, 27, of Rhode Island’s 55 high schools, according to RIDE.

Toll Gate’s graduation rate was 89.9 percent, its English Language proficiency was 44.1 percent, Math proficiency was 17.7 percent, and Science proficiency was 26.4 percent.

Pilgrim High School’s graduation rate was 85.4 percent, with an ELA proficiency of 51 percent, Math proficiency at 20.1 percent, and Science proficiency at 32.3 percent. 

By comparison, Coventry High School, rated as a three-star school, had an 88.6 percent graduation rate, a 53.7 percent ELA proficiency, a Math proficiency at 28.1 percent, and science proficiency at 32.7 percent. RIDE notes their rating was driven primarily on achievement and growth.

Warwick Middle Schools RIDE Report Cards

The city’s two middle schools, Pilgrim and Toll Gate, were rated 2, as were the majority, 30, of Rhode Island’s 59 middle schools, according to RIDE.

Warwick Veterans Middle School’s English Language proficiency was 26.4 percent. The school’s math proficiency rate was 20.1 percent.  

Winman Middle School’s rate of English Language proficiency was 26.2 percent. The school’s math proficiency rate was 25.6 percent.

Warwick Schools Overall RIDE Report Card

For the district as a whole, the average ELA proficiency rate was 32.8 percent, while the average math proficiency rate was 25.8 percent. The overall 4 year graduation rate was 82.5 percent. 

Statewide, average ELA proficiency was 35.1 percent. Average math proficiency was 28.9 percent. The four year graduation rate average was 83.5 percent.

Warwick Teachers Union President Darlene Netcoh assailed RIDE’s rankings, calling them “asinine.”

Warwick RIDE Report Cards Next Steps

“It is unfair for (RIDE) to publish these rankings based on their flawed system,” Netcoh said, noting one low score had the ability to drag a school’s overall score down.

Schultz said that to improve ratings, the district would track student data and progress, using student discourse and data chats, and personalize instruction.
