WARWICK, RI — Reports of a car striking a tree on Sea View Drive at 9:54 a.m. Oct. 11 drew WPD officer Kyle Fitzsimmons, who found and arrested the driver, fleeing on foot, for reckless driving.
Fitzsimmons reported answering the report of the crash near the area of Sea View Drive and Coburn Street, where a witness reported hearing screeching tires before seeing the car strike a tree and launch in the air.
Fitzsimmons searched the area for the driver, who reportedly fled the crash on foot carrying a package, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black sweat pants and red sneakers. The officer found the man on 184 Pinehurst Ave. carrying a Playstation 5 box, headed east. Fitzsimmons detained and searched the man, finding a fold of about $1,600 on him. Fitzsimmons identified the man as Giron Robinson, 25, of 10 Oxford St., Apt. 3, Cranston, RI.
Fitzsimmons spoke with Robinson, who told him he’d been driving at a high speed while texting prior to the crash, and that he ran from the scene when a witness yelled at him. He also told Fitzsimmons the car belonged to a friend.
Robinson refused medical treatment, though he did report striking his face on the steering wheel, which he said was sore. Fitzsimmons transported him to Warwick Police Headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, where he was charged with Reckless Driving. He was later transported to Kent County Memorial Hospital for a medical evaluation before appearing in Third Division District Court.
In court, Robinson pled no contest to the charge, and was sentenced to one year, with 75 days to serve, with 290 days suspended and 290 days probation. He was also cited for driving without a license.
