SCITUATE, RI — Wednesday morning, Providence Water, Warwick’s main water supplier, found and contained a chlorine gas leak at their Scituate water treatment facility.

Providence Water said in statement that fire and police were contacted and arrived on site. Out of an abundance of caution, the water treatment facility was temporarily closed down. No Providence Water employees were injured, according to the utility.

The leak was identified and isolated, and the facility is back online and operating using a backup chlorine gas supply, Providence Water reported. Customers’ water, including most of Warwick, is safe to drink.

With the exception of the Potowomut area, one hundred percent of Warwick’s water is purchased directly from the Providence Water Supply Board, a surface water supplier.  Water for the Potowomut system is purchased from Kent County Water Authority.
