WARWICK, RI — Officer Kerri-Ann Leighton spotted a green Ford sedan stuck on a dirt berm at the corner of Atlantic and Warwick Avenues bordering the parking lot of CVS May 6 at 12:36 a.m., arresting the driver on a DUI charge.
As Leighton approached the vehicle, a CVS employee met with her, saying he had been about to call police about the stuck driver, according to the officer’s report. Leighton noted the Ford had a damaged front end, then spoke with the driver, identifying him as Michael Peotrowski, 42, of 1457 Plainfield Pike, Johnston.
As they spoke, Leighton reported she could smell an odor of alcohol on his breath and that his eyes were bloodshot and watery. Peotrowski told the officer that he had come from a Providence nightclub, Desire, and that he had been drinking that evening, according to the report.
Leighton asked for the driver’s license, and Peotrowski handed her his bank card instead.
Leighton ran Peotrowski through a series of sobriety tests, during which the driver exhibited a lack of smooth pursuit and involuntary eye movements in his vision, failed to walk in a straight line, and could not safely balance on one foot, according to the report.
Leighton arrested Peotrowski and transported him to Warwick Police Headquarters, where he refused to submit to a breath test. The officer charged him with DUI, first offense, blood alcohol unknown, and later released him into the custody of a sober adult.
