WARWICK, RI — A Warwick officer arrested a driver on West Shore Road on a hit & run charge Aug. 10 at 11:29 a.m. after the other driver in the crash chasing him waved the policeman down and pointed the man’s green truck a few cars ahead of him.

Officer Alfred Marano was patrolling on West Shore Road near Oakland Beach when the driver of a black Jeep towing a small boat on a trailer flagged him down, according to the officer’s report. The man told Marano he had just been in a crash with a green truck that had fled the scene. The truck, the man told Marano, was only a few cars ahead of him in traffic.

Marano pulled a U-turn and pulled over the truck’s driver, identifying him as Miguel Pavao, 44, of 666 Providence St., Apt. 2 rear, West Warwick, RI. Pavao told the officer he had been attempting to pull over to discuss the crash with the other driver but had missed the parking lot they’d agreed to meet in and had waved for the man to continue following him.

The struck driver said he’d been traveling south on Oakland Beach Avenue when the green truck struck his car from behind at a red light in front of the Family Dollar, at the intersection of Warwick Avenue and Oakland Beach Avenue  The two drivers got out of their vehicles, and the truck driver suggested they talk over the crash in a nearby parking lot.

As the Jeep driver approached the lot, however, the green truck drove away, the Jeep driver reported, according to Marano’s report.

Marano arrested Pavao, charging him with failing in his duty to stop following a crash.
