WARWICK, RI  — Officer David Boardman was driving south on Post Road near its intersection with Airport Road March 13 when he spotted a gray 2015 Ford Focus stopped in the middle of the road, its driver apparently sleeping, then followed and arrested the driver after it sped away at 2:18 a.m.
Boardman followed as the Focus swerved over the double yellow line and traveled left of the center line, drifting into the opposite lane of travel.
Boardman stopped the driver and identified them as Ryan Mullholland, 31, of 39 Grimshaw Pl., Warwick, noting a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, according to the officer’s report, and his speech was slurred and thick. Mulholland told the officer he’d be coming from a bar in Providence, where he had about five beers, according to the report.
A series of sobriety tests did not go well for Mulhollnnd. He demonstrated a lack of smooth pursuit in his vision, couldn’t balance steadily during a walk and turn test, and could also not balance for the one-leg-stand test.
Boardman arrested Mulholland on suspicion of DUI and transported him to WPD headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Driver, where he refused a breath test. Boardman charged Mullholland with DUI, second offense, blood alcohol unknown, and cited him for refusing the test and for lane violations.
