Need to know basics

need to know2Warwick, RI – Good morning and welcome to Wednesday! Here is a list of notable notes for the day. Don’t bother with a sweater today, and thank goodness that the ISS wasn’t depending on yesterday’s launch for lunch.

Potowomut Station build begins –  Mayor Scott Avedisian, Fire Chief Edmund Armstrong and Glenn Ahlborg, Ahlborg Construction Corporation”s director of project development, will break ground on the $2.5 million Potowomut fire station today at 9:30 a.m.

The event will take place at 225 Potowomut Road.

Antares explodes on launch – The Antares Rocket launch we told readers about yesterday afternoon was not in fact visible from southern New England as we reported, because seconds after lift-off the vehicle exploded.

The unmanned rocket carried 1,360.3 lbs. of food, among other supplies, including science experiments to be conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS), according to the cargo manifest.

“While NASA is disappointed that Orbital Sciences’ third contracted resupply mission to the International Space Station was not successful today, we will continue to move forward toward the next attempt once we fully understand today’s mishap. The crew of the International Space Station is in no danger of running out of food or other critical supplies,” the agency reports on its website.

You can watch a Youtube video of the rocket exploding on takeoff. NASA is investigating the malfunction.

Balmy weather – Today will be a beautiful fall day, with temperatures in the 70s, according to accuweather.com. On the down side, there’ll be some clouds and a rain shower in the afternoon.
