Need to Know Basics: Council, Coffee, Traffic Delays

need to knowHere’s a roundup of important things to know today as you plan your travels in, out and around the city:

Coffee Today: Brewed Awakenings CoffeeHouse in Warwick at 1316 Bald Hill Road opens today with full hours. The new coffee shop is open Monday thru Wednesday 5 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Thursday thru Saturday 5 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Council Tonight: The Warwick City Council meets tonight, 7 p.m., in Council Chambers, Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road.

Among the items on their agenda, the Council will vote on a number of bids on the consent calendar, including  $3,000 for repair parts for  salt and sand spreaders, $374,212 for 11 Ford Taurus AWD police interceptors, and $2,587,000 awarded to Ahlborg Construction Corp. of Warwick to build a Potowomut Fire Station at the site of the old Potowomut School.

The funds for the Potowomut Fire Station project come from the balance of a $2 million bond approved by voters in 2006. Some of the funds have been expended demolishing the old school. (See embedded .pdf)

First item on the main agenda is a claim from Tanya Ferrera of Canna Street, who left her house March 31, with her wood stove burning, returning to find the Warwick Fire Department had been called there in her absence, and broke down her door responding to what they believed was a possible house fire.

Container Gardening at the Library: Join the Warwick Neck Garden Club and URI Master Gardener Lee Menard tonight at 7 p.m. in the Warwick Public Library’s Large Meeting Room at 600 Sandy Lane to learn how to garden in winter.

Live Model Drawing – Join the Warwick Museum of Art at 3259 Post Road from 6-8:30 p.m. tonight for a night of drawing from a live model, a cornerstone of artistic training, giving artists a chance to tackle technical issues including, composition, form and structure  and foreshortening.

The class is $8 per person, and there is a required 10 person minimum for the course to be held. Participants must be 18 years old or older, and must bring their own drawing materials.

Overnight Paving on I-95 continues in Warwick and West Warwick, I-95 North and South, from Exit 7 (New London Turnpike) to Exit 9 (Rte. 4), alternating lane closures for paving, Sunday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.

Apponaug Project Traffic Advisory – RIDOT warns of delays weekdays from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Rte. 1 (Post Road) North, from West Shore Road to Veterans Memorial Drive, where two lanes are closed for utility work. Also, one lane is closed for utility work on Veterans Memorial Drive, from Rte. 1 (Post Road) to Greenwich Avenue and, on Rte. 117 (Centerville Road), from Diamond Hill Road to Tollgate Road during the same time period.

Overnight,  through Thursday, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, utility work will close two lanes on Rte. 1 North, from West Shore Road to Veterans Memorial Drive. DOT will also close two lanes on Rte. 1 (Post Road) at West Shore Road to complete the relocation of overhead cable wires. Expect delays for both operations. On Veterans Memorial Drive, from Route 1 (Post Road) to Greenwich Ave., DOT will close one lane for construction, Sunday-Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.

The folks at the Warwick Animal Shelter are getting ready for the 11th Annual Howloween bash, scheduled for Oct. 25 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 475 Sandy Lane, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and all proceeds benefit the shelter animals.
