Lakewood Baptist Invites Community to Food Bank Benefit Concert

Warwick, RI – Lakewood Baptist Church’s 13th annual Benefit Concert for the RI Food Bank is this Sunday at 6:30 p.m., and they’d like for you to enjoy the music of several church bands in return for food donations.

The concert boasts performances from bands assembled by Lakewood Baptist Church, Norwood Baptist Church, Pawtuxet Baptist Church, Warwick Central Baptist Church, Spring Green Memorial Church, Phenix Baptist Church, Woodbury Union Church, Presbyterian and First Baptist Church in Wickford.

Admission to the concert at the church, located at 255 Atlantic Ave., requires at least one non-perishable food item (A free-will offering for the food bank will also be taken – you can make checks payable to RI Community Food Bank)

The concert started in 2003 by former Pastor, Rev. Nancie Mooney along with the help of church member Lincoln Smith, who took on organizing the event in 2004.

“I had a passion to want to do something for those in need.  Nobody should go hungry especially in this great country of ours,” Smith said.

Last year, they collected 300 lbs of food, and this year, Smith’s goal is 350 lbs.

For many years the food went directly to the Food Bank, Smith said, but for the last five years the food bank has asked the church to deliver the food to West Bay Community Action.  “That has been nice since our church collects food for West Bay Community Action every week.  The church also, gives boxes of food out to those in need,” Smith said.
