Residents heard the crash and rushed to the scene, where they and other bystanders aided the drivers of each vehicle. At the Subaru, which had damage to the roof, front and both sides, with a shattered windshield, a man used a towel provided by a woman to put direct pressure on the driver’s left arm, wrapping it and telling him to keep it elevated. The Subaru driver was transported by Hopkins Hill Rescue to the hospital.
At the Nissan, bystanders urged the two women to get out of the car, which was leaking fluid onto the street. They exited from the driver’s side door and declined transport by Hopkins Hill Fire Department for an evaluation at the hospital, opting to let family members take them.
HHFD dispatched two rescues and one fire engine to the scene, and Coventry Police sent five cruisers to secure the scene and detour traffic around the crash, which remained blocked for about 45 minutes, until both vehicles were transported from the scene by flatbed trucks. Each had to be winched onto the flatbeds.
Witness accounts indicate the Subaru driver attempted to pass the Nissan on the right as the SUV driver stopped to make a right-hand turn into a driveway. The Subaru struck the Nissan, pushing it toward Lorraine Road and rolling at least once north, coming to a rest on its wheels in front of 181 Hopkins Hill Road.
