WARWICK, RI — Officer Kyle Palmer noticed a red 2007 Ford FMS headed through the Greenwich Avenue-Veterans Memorial Drive rotary, headlights off, July 20 at 11:49 p.m., and stopped the driver, arresting him for a suspended license and outstanding warrant.
Palmer followed the Ford a short distance, after which the driver turned his headlights on, according to the officer’s report. The office pulled the driver over at 166 Toll Gate Road and spoke with the driver, identifying him as Eriq L. Sykes, 26, of 37 Clyde St., West Warwick.
Sykes said he had forgotten to put his lights on after leaving the Cumberland Farms in Apponaug, driving with them off for a distance he described as 500 ft., according to the officer’s report. The distance, according to Google Maps, is nearly one mile.
When asked for his driver’s license, Sykes said his wallet had been stolen, and offered his passport, assuring Palmer he had a valid RI driver’s license. A check of Sykes with DMV records showed his license was actually suspended. A second check also showed he had an active warrant in Fourth District Court for driving on a suspended license.
Palmer asked Sykes to step out of the Ford and arrested him, placing him in his cruiser and transporting him to Warwick Police Headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, where he was processed and charged with driving with a suspended license, and cited for failing to use headlights when required. He was then transported to the ACI.
