COVENTRY, RI — Coventry Police arrested a local woman April 12 for cruelty to animals when officers discovered two dogs in her care were extremely malnourished.
That day, according to Coventry Police patrol officers and and Animal Control officers responded to the area of Helen Drive for the report of two stray dogs that appeared to be emaciated. Officers located two Pit Bull type dogs that were severely underweight, with their hips, spines, and ribs clearly visible through their skin. The dogs were also suffering from skin infections causing hair loss, along with old wounds to their face and head. These dogs were immediately taken to a local animal hospital for treatment.
Police determined the owner of the dogs was Casey Mooney, 26, of 4 Lane 3, Mapleroot Village.
Police allege Mooney’s neglect in caring for the animals contributed to their current condition. Mooney responded to Coventry Police Headquarters April 18 for questioning, where she was ultimately
charged with two counts of Unnecessary Cruelty to Animal – RIGL § 4-1-3 and two counts of Care of Dogs – R.I.G.L. § 4-13- 42. After being processed at Coventry Police Headquarters, Miss Mooney will be due in 3rd District Court on May 15 at 9 a.m. for arraignment.
The dogs remain in the care and custody of our dedicated Animal Control Officers and are not available for adoption at this time.
