COVENTRY, RI — As U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI)’s $12.3M community project funding bill moves to the Senate, Coventry seems poised for $707,000 in new K-9 and command vehicles and equipment.

Wednesday, Magaziner announced the House passage of $12,353,131 in federal funding he requested for 14 community projects in Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District in this year’s government funding package. The legislation will now be taken up by the Senate, and is expected to be passed and sent to President Biden for his signature.

The Senate now will take up the bill before midnight Friday, according to Magaziner’s office. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer said he would put the bill on the floor immediately after House passage with the goal to pass it “with time to spare” before the deadline to head off a partial government shutdown this weekend.

According to the request on the CPD’s behalf, the department needs, “a new specialty K-9 vehicle that is properly outfitted with special equipment to ensure the safety of the officer and the dog, two unarmored mobile command vehicles, a technology upgrade to increase the capacity of their servers to improve data capacity and switch to two factor authentication, communications upgrades in the form of portable radios for their officers (60 radios), and a mobile command unit trailer and pickup truck to respond to community disasters and crisis incidents.”

“Delivering results for Rhode Islanders has always been my top priority in Congress, and I’m proud to have secured federal funding that will benefit the working people of our state,” said Magaziner. “This funding will go towards local projects to improve public safety, invest in schools and libraries, upgrade water management systems, and make Rhode Island a better place to live. I’m excited to see these projects break ground and come to fruition.”

Magaziner’s 14 Community Project Funding requests were included in the first tranche of government funding legislation for fiscal year 2024.
