COVENTRY, RI — The girls varsity basketball squad won two matchups against Mt. Hope while the boys cagers had mixed results during their homestand this week in Coventry sports, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.
Boys basketball:
Coventry goes 1-1 in homestand
The boys varsity team went 1-1 in their first two games of a four-game homestand, winning 42-36 over Central Falls on Dec. 27 before dropping a close 64-62 decision against Burrillville on Dec. 30. The Oakers outscored the visiting Broncos in the last three quarters after Burrillville racked up a 21-6 lead in the first stanza. Coventry hosted Chariho on Jan. 4; results were not available by deadline for this article.
Next up: Coventry hosts Mt. Hope on Jan. 12.
Girls basketball:
Oakers take two against Mt. Hope
Coventry’s girls varsity basketball squad won both sides of their home at home series against Mt. Hope, defeating the Huskies 44-33 on Dec. 23 and winning 53-49 on the road on Jan. 2. Grace Colicchio led the Oakers with 21 points while Tori Healey added 12 in the second matchup. The victories extended Coventry’s win streak to four games and improved their record to 5-3 overall, good for sixth in Division 2.
Next up: Coventry travels to Chariho on Jan. 5 and hosts Cumberland on Jan. 9.
Boys hockey:
Coventry blanked by Chariho/Narragansett
The boys varsity team lost 9-0 to the Chariho/Narragansett co-op team on Jan. 3, despite a 15-shot second period against the South County squad. Netminders Billy Whelan and Abby Enos combined for 27 saves for the Oakers.
Next up: Coventry hosts South Kingstown on Jan. 6.
Girls hockey:
Oakers return after bye week
The Coventry girls hockey team returns to action on Jan. 9, hosting Auburn High School from Massachusetts.
