Coventry Sports: Ladies Defeat Mt. Pleasant, Boys Take First ‘W’

COVENTRY, RI — This week in Coventry sports, the varsity girls basketball team extended their road win streak to two games and the boys basketball squad earned its first win of the season, as reported by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Girls basketball:

Oakers secure two-game win streak

The girls varsity basketball team defeated Mt. Pleasant 68-43 on Dec. 21, giving the Oakers their second straight victory and improving their overall records to 3-3, good for 7th in Division 2. Coventry hosted Exeter-West Greenwich on Dec. 27; information was not available by deadline for this article.

Next up: Coventry kicks off a home-at-home against Mt. Hope, hosting the Huskies on Dec. 28 before traveling to Bristol on Jan. 2.

Boys basketball:

Coventry gets first win over E-WG

The boys varsity basketball team secured a 57-52 win at Exeter-West Greenwich on Dec. 22, the Oakers’ first victory of the season. Coventry’s 57 points were the squad’s highest tally in five games. The Oakers hosted Central Falls on Dec. 27; information was not available by deadline for this article.

Next up: The Oakers continue four home games against Burrillville on Dec. 30 and Chariho on Jan. 4 before wrapping the homestand against Mt. Hope on Jan. 12.

Boys hockey:

Oakers fall to Wizards

Coventry dropped an 8-2 decision against West Warwick on Dec. 22, leaving the Oakers winless on the season so far. Junior Evan Rogers scored a power play goal in the first period, set up by junior Collin King, and tallied a second score in the third period with a helper by junior Nicholas Andersen. Senior netminder Billy Whelan made 30 stops for the Oakers. Coventry hosted South Kingstown on Dec. 27; information was not available by deadline for this article.

Next up:  Coventry travels to Narragansett on Jan. 3.
