Bennett Named House Committee on Environment, Natural Resources Chair

Editor’s note: The following report was provided by the Legislative Press and Public Information Bureau.

STATE HOUSE – House Speaker Nicholas A. Mattiello has appointed Rep. David A. Bennett (D-Dist. 20, Warwick, Cranston) chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.

The House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources hears all matters pertaining to environmental issues, such as conservation, pollution, renewable energy and the green economy.

Bennett previously served as vice chairman of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, on which he has served since he first joined the House in 2011.

“I am honored and look forward to this role,” said Bennett. “I’ve always cared deeply about protecting Rhode Island’s beautiful environment and natural resources, and it will be a pleasure to help steer our state’s environmental policies. It’s an exciting time to be in this position, as our green sector is one of the most successful and rapidly expanding parts of our economy. Our committee has some challenging and satisfying work ahead of us.”

Representative Bennett will continue to serve as a member of the House Health, Education and Welfare Committee, a role he has also had as long as he has been in the House.

A psychiatric nurse, Bennett lives in Warwick with his wife, Ann, and daughter, Giana. Besides environmental issues, he has been active sponsoring bills addressing health, including numerous successful initiatives aimed at addressing the state’s opioid overdose crisis. He has also been the primary sponsor of every law enacted to raise Rhode Island’s minimum wage since 2012.
