Warwick, RI – The Warwick Museum of Art’s 29th Annual RI Open exhibit‘s opening reception drew about 65 people Sept. 9 to see more than 50 paintings, sculpture and photography created by 32 area artists.
The yearly event is a good opportunity for local residents to get a first look at cutting edge artworks produced in New England. This year, pieces for the show were selected from submissions by Juror Françoise M. McAree, a renowned artist and the Fine and Applied Arts Coordinator at RISD.
Artists’s work receiving particular notice from the judge were:
“Evening Serenity” by Paul Noel — Excellence Award
“The Seamstress” by Marcia Blair — Excellence Award
“Behind The Scenes” by Nancy Nielsen — Honorable Mention
“Adoni” by Heather Frymark — Honorable Mention
“I See You” by Elinor Thompson — Honorable Mention
“Messenger II” by Noelle King — Honorable Mention
It’s nice to have so many artists submitting such diverse work, said Museum manager Taylor Terreri. “…a little bit of everything,” she said.
One of the artists was Dongze Huo, spoke a little about his painting, “Forbidden Colors.”
“It’s hard to handle everything in my life,” Huo said, as he grows older. The older he becomes, the fewer choices appear to be open to him, so this particular work of his, an abstract mix of blue, black and gold, is limited to those colors as a representation of that feeling.
The theme invokes Taoism, he said.
The Museum is open to visitors: Wednesday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. / Thursday: 1 – 7 p.m./ Friday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. / Saturday: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
