WARWICK, RI — Officer Derek Mourato was traveling west on Centerville Road Oct. 12 at 8:02 p.m. when he spotted a red 1998 Jeep Cherokee swerving in and out of of its lane, pulled it over and arrested the driver after the man stopped his car in the middle of the street, charging him with DUI.
Once the Jeep was stopped, Mourato approached the driver and identified him as Shawn Angell, 25, of 10 Prospect Hill Ave., West Warwick, asking where he was coming from, according to the officer’s report. Angell replied he’d been on his way to cash a check. When Mourato asked if he’d had any alcohol, Angell replied that he had drunk one drink.
As they spoke, Mourato could smell alcohol on the man’s breath. He also noted Angell had bloodshot, watery eyes. The officer also noted several empty Bud Light cans and fireball nip bottles in the driver’s door compartment.
Mourato invied Angell to a series of sobriety tests, which did not go well for the driver. He demonstrated a lack of smooth pursuit in his vision, was unable to walk heel-to-toe in a straight line, and could not safely balance on one foot.
Mourato arrested Angell and transported him to Warwick Police headquarters, where he charged him with DUI, blood alcohol content unknown, and cited him for refusing to submit to a breath alcohol test. Mourato also cited him for lane violations.
