WARWICK, RI — Warwick Police shut down Main Avenue from Grayson Ave to Trinity Street this afternoon at about 3:44 p.m. after a scooter crash with a pickup seriously injured the scooter rider.

The section of road remained closed as the Warwick Police Traffic Division investigated the circumstances of the crash, as Warwick Police noted on their Facebook page.  Main Avenue was re-opened for traffic at 6:29 p.m.

Officers were dispatched to the Main Avenue and Sharon Street intersection after the crash. Officers found the 36-year-old  male scooter rider on the ground in the area of 854 Main Ave. with serious bodily injury. The scooter operator was not wearing a helmet, Warwick Police reported in a statement about the investigation. Warwick EMS personnel arrived on scene, stabilized, and transported the rider to Rhode Island Hospital.

The operator of the truck, a 42-year-old male from Warwick, is cooperating with police and remained on the scene of the crash.

Initial investigation shows the pick-up truck was traveling east on Main Ave approaching Sharon Street when the scooter, which was traveling west on Main Avenue, attempted to make a left turn onto Sharon Street from the Main Avenue westbound left turn lane. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police said speed did not appear to have been a factor. Main Avenue is the scene of frequent serious traffic accidents.

The Warwick Police Traffic Units’ Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the crash and is leading the investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is encouraged to contact the Traffic Unit at 401-468-4200. Anonymous tips can be submitted via the WARWICKPD app or text WARWICKPD to 847411.
