WARWICK, RI — A 58-year-old bicyclist is in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital after his Tuesday night bicycle-SUV crash in the 2211 West Shore Road Shell Gas Station lot with a white Chevy Traverse, Warwick Police report.
Police report that on Tuesday June 11, at about 9:31 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area for a report of a car and bicyclist crash. Officers found the man on the ground in the parking lot, apparently unresponsive. Warwick EMS personnel transported him to Kent Hospital with CPR in progress. EMS and hospital staff were successful in regaining a pulse. The man was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition.
The Warwick Police Traffic Units’ Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the crash. Their intial investigation determined that the Traverse driven by Kathleen Augustyn, 61, of Warwick had been travelling east on West Shore Road and was making a left turn into the entrance of the Shell Gas Station at 2211 West Shore Road, when a the man riding the bicycle west collided with the Traverse and was thrown from the bicycle.
The operator of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors, police report. While no charges are pending at this time, police said their investigation is ongoing.
Identification of the victim is being withheld until family has been notified.
